Every now and then an opportunity comes along too good to pass up.
It was a call out of the blue from UK national radio station BBC Radio Five Live asking if I’d be interested in being a guest editor and presenter of an hour of their afternoon show to talk about ME. Er… yes!
The production team were brilliant and took on my suggestions for guests, and as well as the programme itself they published a short video diary and a blog post from me on the main BBC website. Great exposure and awareness for the illness.
If you missed it, you can listen to the programme here.
You can watch the video diary here.
And you can read the blog post they published here.
I was absolutely overwhelmed by the messages I received afterwards. I expected some, maybe a few dozens, but it turned into hundreds and now well over a thousand messages from people all over the world who heard the broadcast.
I recorded a short video once I’d got home from the radio studio to reflect on the experience.
As a consequence of that national radio coverage, the Jersey Evening Post newspaper published a feature article about my ME experience…
Thank you to reporter David Edbrooke for the piece.
BBC Radio Jersey also interviewed me about this whirlwind week. You can hear the hour-long interview two hours into this programme.
Great interview, so glad awareness is coming out now, I have tried for years

Thank you so much for speaking out For all of us living with ME. I thought that the factual way you put the info across was really powerful and have sent links for friends and family to listen to the program as you explained the illness much better than I have been able to. Thank you!!

Great broadcast Gary. Well done for speaking out and shining a light on this condition.
I know it must really drain you to do this, which makes your efforts so much appreciated by all of us.
PS. Hope the wedding plans are coming along well.
You will be in good company with Harry and Meghan getting married in same month?
Regards
Richard
